When one thinks of pollution, the first thought in their mind is the outdoor air pollution that we are all aware of and struggling with in our day-to-day life. In fact, it is quite easy to see, feel and understand the negative effects of outdoor air pollution. Spending long hours in traffic signals we have seen the smoke emissions from cars, the dust and pollutants in the air and the sticky humid weather and we know that all these make our air quality bad. But not many are aware about the perils of indoor air pollution. Well, to many, it may come as a surprise that even the indoor air is polluted.
Let’s delve deep into the indoor world we all confine ourselves into almost 90% of our time. The World Health Organization states that the air we breathe indoors is 5 times worse than the air we breathe outdoors. While outdoor air gives you a visual of harmful particulates like smoke, dust, etc., indoor air is an invisible and silent killer.
We feel that with windows closed, doors shut, regular dusting and cleaning along with a cozy air conditioned indoor environment is a safe one but in reality particulate matter less than 0.25 microns in size, known as PM25 are always present indoors and they can cause a great deal of damage to the human body.
Pet dander, dust particles, germs and viruses, PM25, formaldehyde, mildew, pollen, gases/TVOC, dust mite, paint fumes, cigarette and incense stick smoke, odour, etc. are the pollutants present in the air we breathe indoors.
To conclude the argument, we can clearly state that even though air pollution on the outside is quite evident and visibly dangerous, the air pollution indoors is a much higher risk for you and your family.
